Hawai’i’s Wild West is a series of portraits, reportage, and landscapes documenting a part of Hawai’i that is seldom seen. A former land scheme developed in the 1950’s on top of old lava flows, Ocean View is currently the nation’s largest subdivision, comprised of about 11,000 one-acre lots with a total area of 106.5 square miles and a population of roughly 4,000 people. It’s also not the tropical paradise that comes to mind when you imagine the state. The landscape is harsh and rugged; many of residents live off-grid and the community has a reputation for crime, drugs, unpermitted structures, and eccentric people. Yet the community has a tenacious spirit, and those who claim it as home are fiercely proud. Hawai’i’s Wild West is the story of a group living on the edge, geographically and socially.
