Rochester’s Public Market
One of my ongoing photo projects focuses on businesses that have been around a long time. So, when I was back in my hometown of Rochester, NY, I just had to capture some images at the Public Market, which has been in business since 1905. Since 1905, folks! If anything in Portland can hold a candle to that, please let me know.
The Public Market is simply amazing. It’s open 3 days a week, every week of the year. Fruits, veggies, cheeses, breads, meats, food trucks, incense – you name it and you could probably find it here. And the quality of the produce! I saw cabbages the size of basketballs. And listen up Portland: No one has to tell Rochesterians to leave the SUV strollers and dogs at home. No wonder Rochester’s Public Market was voted America’s favorite farmer’s market in 2010 – it’s got it!
Portland Spaces: Flying Fish Company
So back to this shoot with the adorable Miss Junie. Juniper’s dad, Lyf, opened Flying Fish Company‘s first Portland location out of a truck last summer. I was immediately hooked (ha! no pun intended) on his seafood, some of the most delicious I’ve ever tasted and all sustainably sourced. Lyf has since moved on to a little shop attached to Kruger’s Farm Market on Hawthorne. He also carries meat, poultry, farm fresh eggs, milk, cheese and chocolate pudding. Between the community this place draws and Lyf’s enthusiasm for his products, this has to be the best food shopping in Portland. And remember – there’s chocolate pudding, folks!
Juniper Is A Good Egg
Here’s another sneak peek of a very special shoot I did over the weekend, at Lyf Gildersleeve’s awesome fish shack, Flying Fish Company. This is Lyf’s adorable daughter Juniper, exploring a carton of farm fresh eggs. Her favorites are the green ones!
