Photographer Jay Maisel – aka God With A Cigar – came to Portland a couple of weeks ago. And I not only got to listen to his philosophy on shooting and see tons of his incredible images, but I actually met God himself. Huge props go to Muffy, Polara‘s Studio Manager, who hooked me up. She pulled me on over to him and said, “Jay, this is Ronit – she’s a huge fan and she’s from New York!” God glanced at me and shook my hand. “So, you’re from New York,” he says, in the kind of unique voice only God could have. “Well, Jay, I’m from Rochester.” “Rochester! That’s not New York. That’s Siberia!” I tried arguing with him but I didn’t get far – I mean, you just don’t argue with God. So I started chatting. I told him what an honor it was to meet my mentor‘s mentor. “What’d you learn? Tell me in one sentence.” “Um, watch the edges of the frame. Oh, and no triangles!” And at that, God smiled, and shook my hand again. The meeting was over.
